UNC Health Southeastern in top 10% of hospitals in the United States for patient safety, according to Healthgrades

LUMBERTON – UNC Health Southeastern has been recognized by Healthgrades as a recipient of the 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Award™.

This distinction places UNC Health Southeastern among the top 10% of all acute care hospitals rated by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting patients and providers.

“This award from Healthgrades is further testament to the dedication of UNC Health Southeastern staff to serving our community,” said Chris Ellington, President and CEO of UNC Health Southeastern. “Ensuring the safety of our patients while taking care of their disease is a top priority and to be recognized for this commitment as one of the best in the country is extraordinary.”

During the 2018-2020 study period, 170,231 potentially preventable patient safety events occurred among Medicare patients in US hospitals.* Healthgrades found that just four patient safety indicators accounted for 74% of all patient safety events: fall, collapsed lung resulting from procedure/surgery, pressure sores or hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, and hospital-acquired catheter-related bacteraemia. Healthgrades also found that patients treated at hospitals receiving the Healthgrades 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ were, on average:

— 55.8% less likely to experience a fall in hospital resulting in a hip fracture than patients treated in non-beneficiary hospitals;*

— 52.6% less likely to suffer a collapsed lung resulting from surgery or surgery in or around the chest than patients treated at non-beneficiary hospitals;*

— 66.2% less likely to have pressure ulcers or pressure ulcers contracted in hospital than patients treated in non-beneficiary hospitals;*

— 65.8% less likely to suffer from hospital-acquired catheter-related bloodstream infections than patients treated at non-beneficiary hospitals.*
